But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33 (ESV)

Have you ever had the thought, “Oh I’m alright…just the way I am?”

Have you ever had the thought, “There has to be more to life than this?”

If you are like me, both questions wrestled each other within the mind of my soul and spirit for years and years. And even though I experienced this measure of discontentment, most in my own circle of friends had no idea how real the struggle was within me. It was not that they did not care, I was just a master pretender in those days. Yeah…I had the best, which would more appropriately be labeled as the worst, facade.  My public face and my behavior always gave the impression I wanted to portray. All the while, I was screaming on the inside…for more, for help, for change, for love, for joy, for peace, and without knowing how to put it all into perspective…for Jesus.

Just this past week, I had the most amazing encounter as I read through Danise Jurado’s, soon to be released, debut book, Fulfilled: Learning to Live the Life God Promised. Actually, in some ways it was as though I was experiencing deja vu as Danise candidly shared about her experience surrounding how she actually came to know this Jesus that I also needed so desperately as a kid. My initial views about Christianity mirrored hers in that I, too, wanted to avoid this church thing that my parents seemed over-the-top crazy about. Also, like Danise, I have shifted my position from needing to be convinced to proudly being the convincer that “Jesus” is all we truly need. I have come to know that God’s promised fulfillment for my life is wrapped up in that One Name.

But then there was another awakening. Finding Jesus was only the beginning. I have come to learn that in this life of salvation, we must constantly strive to grow and maintain our relationship with Him. One of my favorite parts in the book is when Danise shared of a very personal challenge she had such difficulty overcoming. (I am leaving you in suspense here so that you can also have your very own aha moment when you read it for yourself.)

Confession: As I started to read this part of the book, I was was reminded of some challenges I was experiencing with one of my kiddos. At the time, I was reading aloud as we were all driving. I now chuckle at myself for reading louder to make sure she heard this part as I thought, “Surely this is for you missy!” And it did apply to her. But just a few sentences later, Danise began to transparently and specifically share her issue, which slapped me in the face. It is EXACTLY what I have been struggling with for years and just recently surrendered this area of my life to God…again. In that moment I realized I needed to read for me, and let my peeps grasp what they needed for themselves.

That being said, Fulfilled: Learning to Live the Life God Promised is an amazing book that highlights God’s grace and mercy. When we look to Him, He is eager to pour out exactly what we need. In this book, Danise holds nothing back. She lets every reader into her personal space so as to depict God’s absolute desire for every person to experience a life of fulfillment in Him!

Sounds like a good one, Yolanda. Thanks for sharing! God always gets me when I start pointing out other people’s stuff, but it’s good if you can laugh about it and use it as an opportunity to grow!
